Leading Indicators: Tracking Workplace Conditions and Events
When assessing safety and health programs, most employers track lagging indicators (reactive in nature). This is important as company EMR’s (Electronic Medical Records) are based on these numbers. However, tracking leading indicators (proactive in nature) can help prevent worker fatalities, injuries, and illnesses and strengthen other safety and health outcomes in the workplace. A good safety and health program uses leading indicators to drive change and lagging indicators to measure effectiveness.
